Charleston Fishing Report 8/27/10

Well it seems as though summer is winding down. Its been a good one. Despite a tough winter we have caught a lot of great trout this year on topwater early and DOAs during the day. And thats only going to get better. The awesome fall trout fishing is right around the corner. It also seems to be a great year class of puppy drum (8 to 10″ reds). Redfishing here has been improving for years and will only be getting better. This fall and winter should be killer. As far as right now goes the reds have been amazing over the summer and seem to be picking up. Seeing a lot of schooling on the flats and in the last couple of weeks they seem to be gathering more and more. And the fishing for the big guys in the rocks and in the surf has been truly amazing. I have had my best year of surf fishing this year ever. If anyone is interested in surf fishing trips I am happy to do these in the Folly area as well as Bulls Bay and Cape Romain areas. Fishing for the big boys has been awesome this past week. Landed a few in the 15# class and a few nice ones on the fly. Trout bite has been super lots of small ones with a few nice ones mixed in. We are catching the trout early on topwater and glow DOAs mostly.

Just great fishing this week. Lots of big bass on the lowtides with bait, DOAs, and flies. The trout have been excellent as well with a couple of early mornings this week catching 25- 30 fish. The water has really cleared up and the trout are enjoying it. Some great pics from this week.

Decent Fishing the past few days. A little tougher on fly at lowtide than usual. Th fish are happy on the first part of the tide but after it gets up around the shells it gets tough. Bait fishing has been super productive on both tides. Mullet on the bottom or under corks as well as shrimp. The trout bite seemed to be picking up and DOAs have been working the best for those guys. Top water plugs are working good early. We have had a lot wind and some super low tides this past week and it has made it tough. The water seems to be getting a little better this week.

Finally a really good night of fishing on these flood tides. Saw a bunch of fish this evening. Caught some big boys on the edges as well when they were going in on small menhaden. Most of the fish we caught and lost were before the water got up. It was super high and came in very quick. We had about an hour and a half before it got a little to high in the area we were wading. My new friend Thomas caught some good ones up there on cut crab. Good job T!

Awesome topwater action yesterday morning. A bunch of big trout in the boat on spooks, skitter walks, and yozuri’s. Biggest about 4 lbs. Tailing fishing was slow in the evening but the topwater bite in the morning seems to be on fire.

Fishing for trout and reds this week has been solid. The weather has changed a bit and has been a little cooler with some wind from the north. Along with some overcast skies the fish have been very happy. Topwater fishing in the morning has been great as well. The fish are all over the shrimp and fishing DOAs has been super productive for reds as well as trout. Have been spending some time on the front beach with the northwest winds this week and have caught some very nice trout.

Man June was a hot month for the weather and even hotter for the fishing. The reds have been killer as they have started to turn onto the shrimp really good. There is already a bunch of white shrimp in the creeks and the fish are feeding on it well. They love that stuff.The trout bite is also starting to become a lot more consistent and should continue to improve on the front beach as the summer keeps rolling. The interior temperature is already toasty and that should make the fishing for those big trout awesome out front. Look forward to July some tarpon have been around and are worth the trip next month.

Fishing has been incredible the past few days. Had a great trip with Hugh Willcox and his friends yesterday. Boated 21 reds on live shrimp under corks. Good action at low tide in the afternoon. Thanks to the guys for a great time. Good fishing.
