Charleston Fishing Report 1/16/2012

Fishing has been as good as it gets since about New Years Eve. We have had some 20+ fish days with the fly rod and have been killing em on plastics and bait as well. The water has been super clear since the last cold snap and the fish are really schooled up, highly visible, and happy as well. We have been using mostly light EP type flies and clousers as well. As far as plastics go I like the DOA CALS in Black/Gold Belly, Morning Glory, and Golden Bream. Bait is always working well, I have been using different combinations depending on the situation of crab, mullet, and mud minnows. Fishing has been nothing short of amazing lately. The weather has been excellent, and the reds have been on fire. They are bunching up good and they are still feeding very well. The standard bait approach, corks with mud minnows or mullet and crab on the bottom has been working well. Its also a great time of year for plastics and flies. I have been using a lot of jigs and weedless style baits. Throwing into large schools of fish this time of year is always awesome. There’s nothing like seeing a big red come up and smash a bait you just threw before you can even get the bail turned over. The water is getting to that super clear state and will remain that way for sometime. I fish mostly dark colors this time of year, rootbeer, golden bream, and black over gold are some of my favorites. Winter is always an great time for sight fishing here in the lowcountry.

Fall fishing is in full swing. The fishing is awesome and so is the weather. The inshore bite has been totally insane with the trout and reds. We have once again reached that incredible time of year before the short dark days of winter set in. Just about everything thing has been productive, bait, flies, plastics, and topwater. The fish are schooling heavy and are on the feed like no other time of year. The surf fish is still good for the big boys and we are setting out to give it a try this afternoon.

Its feels like summer is officially over and fall is moving in. This marks a time for some of our best inshore fishing of the entire year. As the water starts to cool of the fish begin foraging for the winter. Big schools of redfish and trout will be feeding heavily over the next couple of months as the water temps start to fall. We are already seeing plenty of this action and the past couple of days have been awesome. Fish smashing shrimp and mullet against the bank, and large groups of birds following schools of fish. The Fall is a magic time. Surf fishing will also reach its peak over the next few weeks with the chance of catching fish in the 50″ class in the surf. Here are some highlights from last week.

September is one of my favorite fishing months of the whole year. All of our summer species are in full swing and the bite will get progressively better as the month rolls on. Redfish, trout, and flounder are all feeding well as our shrimp populations reach the years all time high. The tarpon fishing will also explode this month with the mullet starting their annual migration. Insane bait balls full of large mullet cruising through the inlets and down the beach provide for some amazing action. Tarpon, Sharks, Giant Bull Reds, and dolphin are all feasting on this bait as it moves south down our beaches. Action will be awesome for spin and fly anglers as we move into our best and most popular time of fishing all year. Surf fishing will also be at its best. The beaches will be stacked with large reds. This week has been smokin hot! Plenty of lady fish and trout off the front beach. Monday was super calm and we could get out there and chase those birds around. We landed over 120 fish by 10am. Great action for both spinning and fly. Most of the trout averaged about 13′ with a few larger ones. The big reds have and black drum have also been super off the front beach as well as in the jetties. Inshore fishing has been good for me early in the morning with the reds going crazy on the shrimp and mullet in the shallows. August is one of our best months to fish. There is so much going on with so many different species.

Summertime fishing remains awesome. The trout, reds, flounder, tarpon, and sharks are in full swing along with many other species. Fishing with bait, plastics, and flies has all been productive. Early in the morning topwater has been great as well. In the hot afternoons I have been hitting the jetties for those big reds, sharks and the occasional shot at a tarpon. You get a great breeze usually and the bite there has been great. The surf fishing has remained exceptional as well. Here are some great shots from the yesterday morning. I think we can officially say it is hot out now. With heat indexes creeping up around the 110 mark midday is brutal. However the fishing in the morning has been incredible. Its a great time of year to get out there early for the trout and reds. The temps are nice and the fish are feeding really well. I have included a few pics from this week of some killer fish we caught early. Later in the day I have been focusing a lot of my efforts at the jetties where most days there is a nice breeze in the afternoon. The big reds have been biting well there. The fish can be anywhere from 5 lbs on up to around 40. The tarpon bite has also been on fire this week. With two fish on over 100 lbs and plenty of action. Lots of shark action in these areas to keep us busy as well. Plenty of great fishing this time of year for a variety of things and a great way to beat the heat out on the water.
